Here are the 2015-16 Common Application changes that parents and students need to be aware of: Once again, the Common Application has revised the personal statement essay prompts for the coming application season.
Producing quality essays before the school year begins reduces students’ stress and allows them to focus on the other critical components of their applications — such as grades and test scores — during the fall semester.
Although the 2018-2019 Common App does not go live until August 1st, a number of top schools have already released their supplemental essay questions for the upcoming application season.
As we have mentioned before, the Common Application this year will give schools the option to ask applicants where else they are applying to college this fall.
This has been a controversial announcement and is problematic, as a question like this can be used to judge a student’s likeliness to enroll if admitted – something colleges take seriously as a way to manage yield rates and enrollment models.
That said, if a college does choose to require the Common Application essay, students will have to provide one in order to submit their applications.
If a college does not require the Common Application essay, students will still have the option to include an essay if they wish.
Also this year for the first time, students will be allowed to make as many edits to their Common App essay as they want after submission.
Previously, students were only allowed three essay edits after the first submission, intended to allow students to make minor changes like correcting spelling and grammar errors.
